Patient Advanced Directives
Description: The existence of end-of-life wishes or medical orders provided by a patient or their physician can be problematic for EMS. Understanding what medical care to provide or withhold is difficult to negotiate and can change and impart confusion into resuscitation decisions. This class will explore advanced directives describing the range of documents, medical orders and situations encountered in the pre-hospital setting as well as addressing some of the legal and medical-ethical considerations.
- Provide an overview into the realm of advanced directives focusing on an understanding of their implications for EMS.
- Describe the different implications and actions for EMS when presented with the following:
o Do Not Resuscitate/Intubate physician orders
o Advanced directives
o Living wills
o DNR tattoos and bracelets
o POLST and MOLST documents
o Verbal requests to withhold resuscitation
- Demonstrate the importance of establishing both resuscitation criteria and written guidelines for discontinuing care.
- Describe the MN and WI statutes and differences related to DNR/DNI orders, when they should be honored, and who they pertain to.
